A SEA OF PINK
By Dolores Kosh, WITW, Nutmeg Chapter, Ct. USA
A chilly Sunday morning, August 8, 2004 paved the way for beautiful weather for the 2nd Annual Bikers for the Cure. This function raised money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Lily Lake Inn in Wolcott, Ct. was a nice setting for this event. With a huge parking lot to accommodate all who made the trek and the picturesque surroundings of the grounds; it offered a relaxing atmosphere away from the concrete jungle of the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
This was a very organized event to say the least. From the Indian Riders of Wethersfield, Ct. who manned the two lane registration table along with some members from the Women in the Wind, Nutmeg Chapter; to the informational / Chinese Auction / 50-50 tables; to the free bike show hosted by Women in the Wind; to the buffet cooked by the Lily Lake Inn staff; a live band; vendors set up here and there; everything was set for a fantastic day. Everyone had a hearty appetite as they ran out of ziti and had to cook up some American Fries real quick. (I am still mad at the French and will not call them French Fries anymore!)
After all the food was devoured, the winners of the Chinese Auction was announced and great prizes were given out. If you could not take the prize home on your bike accommodations were made to get it to you thanks to the hosts, the Indian Riders. People seemed to be getting antsy as they tried to hurry the ladies from Women in the Wind who were perusing all the beautiful bikes in the bike show; around forty bikes were entered. It takes time and all the tally sheets had to be finalized. Trophies were given out and smiles were on the proud owners as they left. The final event everyone was waiting for finally arrived! The 50/50 drawing, which gave out two hundred and sixty five dollars to the lucky ticket holder! It was going once, going twice, and almost another number was called. The lucky man finally came forward and was surprised what he won!
The Ride, oh what a ride, in the countryside. After everyone registered between 8:30 and 10:30 am, we were ready to RIDE. There were two State Police Cruisers (one in front and one in the rear) four motorcycle cops (two in front and two in the rear.) With the white cruiser in the lead and two motorcycle cops following; three hundred and twenty-six riders were anxious with pink ribbons on their left hand mirror for the cause. Up front, after the police, we had the staff/volunteers from the Indian Riders as blockers.
I might say they all did a fantastic job and have their stuff together! There were no incidents or breakdowns as they also had a chase vehicle with trailer in tow, just in case. After all the blockers, we had the honor to ride up front; in total about five ladies from the Women in the Wind Chapter, Thank You. Our mission of the Women in the Wind cruises is to donate the money to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. It was exciting to be part of the rumble as people along the streets we traveled heard us coming and waved us on. Even the occupants in their cars beeped/waved and no one got nasty. Other rides I have been on had cars cut into the procession in anger at all the bikes; people get too impatient and do not respect a worthy cause; just like the ones who cut into a funeral procession, no respect.
Thank You all for a fantastic time, one that was presented by Saint Francis Care, Dr. Jon Ballon; Hosted by Karl with all of the Indian Riders of Wethersfield and The Lily Lake Inn; with the proud contributors of Trantolo & Trantolo; Women in the Wind, Nutmeg Chapter; the Road Rage band; Coca-Cola; Margaritas in Canton, Ct.; Promo Promotional Marketing; Cubed Square and The Rock, 106.9 WCCC. A good time was had by all. The final tally raised from this event, which was reported, tripled from the first year to second, at around thirty thousand dollars, very impressive!
